The staging of this rare work opened the festivities for the re-opening of the world famous Anna Amalia library in Weimar (burnt down in 2004) in October 2007. It was Duchess Anna Amalia herself who had commissioned Anton Schweitzer (music) and Christoph Martin Wieland (libretto) to write this opera in 1773. Schweitzer and Wieland reduced Euripides' drama to four characters (inventing Alceste's sister Parthenia, a fulminant coloratura part) and focussed the story completely on the social and private issues and questions on life and death. Concerto Köln played conducted by Michael Hofstetter, the productions was by Hendrik Müller, designed by Mira Voigt. Simone Schneider, Cyndia Sieden, Christoph Genz and Josef Wagner took on the demanding roles. Alceste (Schweitzer)

From 'Alceste': Act 1, Scene 5. Recorded live at the Royal Opera House, 12 December 1981. SEE BELOW FOR LYRICS. This opera was 1 of 3 (the others being Donizetti's 'Mary Stuart' at English National Opera and Gluck's 'Orfeo ed Euridice' at Glyndebourne) that Dame Janet Baker performed as a farewell to the operatic stage (altho' concert recitals continued for a few more years). This is also the only recording that documents her singing this most demanding part--she sings almost throughout the entire evening, proof of her great stamina--and more than meets the dramatic exigencies of the role. In this scene, Alceste, Queen of Thessaly, ponders the fate of her gravely ill husband, King Admetus, whom the oracle at the temple of Apollo has said will die -- unless someone else sacrifices his or her own life for the King's. A segment from the DVD of the fine (but all-too-brief) BBC film documenting Dame Janet Baker's final operatic performance year, 'FULL CIRCLE'. It's autumn in 1981, and here she is just starting rehearsals for the Royal Opera House production of CW Gluck's 'Alceste'. This was the first of three productions that Dame Janet undertook in that last year working in staged operas (the others being Donizetti's 'Mary Stuart' at ENO and Gluck's 'Orfeo ed Euridice' at Glyndebourne - see my other uploads for clips from these operas). Acclaimed opera producer ('director' to US audiences) John Copley, the excellent French vocal coach Janine Reiss and the fine conductor Sir Charles Mackerras are also featured in this segment. I am always mesmerised with every viewing by Dame Janet's rehearsal performance here - the emotional commitment is already in there. Like the true professional she was, could switch the character on or off on a dime to discuss the part objectively with colleagues. It's amazing to witness, this creative process engaged in by artists and professionals of the highest calibre. The film was screened (on British TV, I presume) to coincide with the release of Dame Janet's self-penned book of the same title, which was based on the diary she kept during that last year when she bade farewell to the operatic stage. Both film and book offer a fascinating inside look into the life of a major operatic singer, and are well worth keeping in one's library. To purchase a copy of the <b>...</b> JANET BAKER at...
